The pancake is among the oldest pastries we hungry humans have invented. Pretty much every cuisine has a whole variety of them. And it’s not hard to see why: pancakes are mostly made from everyday ingredients, simple to cook, and versatile for a range of yummy flavours – from sweet to savoury and spicy. It’s also a dish that, just by mentioning, tingles the taste-buds with the sense of joy, love, sharing, and homeliness.
Thus is true for Korean pancakes. Made with an egg or flour batter and packed with seasoning and ingredients. Pan-fried to a flat fritter that’s crispy outside and tender within. Most often shared with family and friends as an appetizer, side dish, snack, a quick and simple meal, street food, as well as a drinking treat.
The most common type you’ll find at a Korean restaurant is the Jeon, filled with chopped vegetables, minced meat or seafood. But that’s just one of the Korean pancakes you can savour. Or rather, you should, because they’re absolutely delish!
Every Jeon pancake is defined by the main ingredient that gives its primary flavour, which are most often a nuanced savoury and umami-ness. The simplest is the Pajeon. Similar to the Chinese Cong You Bing, it’s made with chopped garlic chives or scallions, and exudes an enticing aroma. Served with a dipping sauce-blend of vinegar, soy sauce, green onions and Korean chilli powder for a lightly spicy bite.
The Pajeon batter is also the base for meaty Jeon pancakes. Add seafood, and voila! You’ve made the richly umami Haemul Pajeon. Want a hearty munch? Just go beefy! You can also try it with veggies, pork or poultry.
Want a pancake that’s more filling? Enjoy the Gamjajeon. Wholesome potato and onion batter, seasoned with just a pinch of salt. Super easy to cook, and packs a yummy, satiating taste. Great for breakfast or any meal of the day.
Kimchi is the heart and soul of Korean cuisine. So of course there’s a Kimchi pancake. Want your own authentic taste? Come learn how to make Kimchi with our step-by-step guide, and cook up this zesty, umami pancake with our recipe!
Tteok actually refers to rice-cakes instead of pancakes. The most common type is the Tteokbokki, a spicy, saucy simmered street food. Another is the pan-fried Bindae-tteok. Yet this yummy goodie is not a rice-cake nor made with a flour batter. It’s blended mung beans that gives its base flavour. You can find pre-made Bindae-tteok ‘flour’ at Korean grocers. But of course, fresh is best, and with our easy recipe, all you really need is a blender for the mung beans.
Similar to Kimchijeon, the Jangtteok is made with a signature Korean ingredient – the Gochujang spicy bean paste. Just add it into the flour batter with scallions or chives. Zesty and umami. You can also add in any extra greens or meats you like!
That’s just a handful of our favourite Korean pancakes. The actual list is massive! And we’re sure to explore more of them to give you their authentic recipes. In the meantime, come check out more authentic Korean yummies you can make and enjoy at home!
