Saba Shioyaki (Grilled Mackerel)
Saba Shioyaki


The Saba Shioyaki, or Japanese Grilled Mackerel is one of the more popular seafood dishes served as an entree or part of a bento combination in many Japanese restaurants in Australia. Recreate this quick and simple dish at home with only 5 ingredients!

Ingredients:

2 saba (mackerel fillets)
2 tbsp sake
Salt (to taste)
Daikon (grated, to serve)
Soy sauce




Steps:
  1. Rinse saba under cold water and then quickly dunk the fish in a bowl of sake.
  2. Pat dry the fish with a paper towel and generously salt both side of the fish. Let it sit at room temperature for 20 mins.
  3. Wipe off any excess moisture on the fish.
  4. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Place the fish skin side down on a baking sheet lined with aluminium foil or parchment paper (spray or brush oil so it doesn’t stick). Bake for 15-20 mins, or until the fish is cooked through.
  5. Serve the grilled mackerel with grated daikon on the side. Pour a few drops of soy sauce on grated daikon before you eat. Enjoy!
