Pisang Goreng (Indonesian Fried Banana)

Fried bananas or pisang goreng is a most-welcomed snack in between meals and an easy find in the streets of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. With slight variations to each recipe, pisang goreng is typically deep-fried bananas coated in batter.

Ingredients:

125g rice flour or plain flour (sifted)
80ml water
80ml coconut cream
¼ tsp salt
oil (for deep frying)
4 regular bananas (peeled, halved and sliced lengthwise)




Steps:
  1. Place the flour in a mixing bowl. Make a well in the middle and add the water, coconut cream and salt. Using a wooden spoon or a whisk, gradually incorporate the flour into the liquid and whisk to make a lump-free smooth, thick batter. Add more flour or water as needed.
  2. Heat the oil in a wok or large saucepan until moderately hot. Dip and coat banana pieces thoroughly in batter. Gently lower the coated pieces into the oil, a few at a time, and deep-fry over medium heat for 5-10 mins. Turn occasionally, and fry until golden brown and crispy. Remove from saucepan and drain on paper towels. Transfer to a serving platter and serve with vanilla ice cream if desired.

Note: Pisang Goreng is varied by the type of bananas found in various regions. Bananas commonly used for pisang goreng in Indonesia are the pisang raja (latundan banana), pisang uli and pisang kepok (saba banana).
