Deep-Fried Nian Gao With Sweet Potato And Yam

The deep-fried Nian Gao with Sweet Potato and Yam is commonly served in most Chinese households during the Lunar New Year period. The sticky, sweet and chewy texture of the Nian Gao and the crunchy, deep fried sweet potato and yam goes perfectly together, making this a very addictive snack!
Cooking Time: 15mins - 30mins
Serves:3 to 4
Total time: 30mins - 60mins

Ingredients:

300g Nian Gao* or Chinese steamed sticky cake (thinly sliced)
Sweet potato (thinly sliced)
Yam (thinly sliced)
50g flour
50g rice flour
50g tapioca flour
15g custard powder
1tsp baking powder
30g cooking oil or vegetable oil
200ml water




Steps:
  1. Mix flour, oil and water until mixture is smooth. Set aside for 30 mins.
  2. Sandwich a slice of nian gao in sweet potato and yam. Then, coat with batter.
  3. Deep fry in a wok over medium to low flame till golden brown and crispy.
  4. Serve warm.

*Nian Gao can be bought from Asian grocery stores, or our homemade Nian Gao recipe.
