A Chinese wedding ceremony is incomplete without a wedding tea ceremony. This ceremony is organised by the groom’s family for introducing the bride to the new family.
You will find varieties of tea in China. Generally, the tea is prepared with red tea and saturated with lotus seeds and red dates that are directly placed in the pot. People believe that the tea served by the bride helps in promoting happiness between the couples.
In many parts of Asia, the tea culture is prevalent, and seeps into wedding traditions.
For the Chinese wedding tea ceremony, a small table is set up on which a tray having two tea cups and a tea pot is kept. There are times when a lotus flower along with two cowrie shells are placed over the table signifying prosperity and unity for the newlyweds. This ceremony is arranged early in the morning. Men and women sit to the left and right of the table respectively and the couples kneel down in front of their guests. The bride and the groom take their tea after they have served all the guests.
Today, most people arrange a second tea ceremony mainly for the bride’s family when they come to their in-laws’ house. The parents of the bride have to buy the tea set as a part of the dowry. The best thing about the tea set is it can be reused by the bride for her daughter’s marriage.
You will find both Chinese and Western style wedding tea sets. Among these two, most of the people prefer the western style wedding tea sets. Some of the popular designs are dragon and phoenix, gold trimmings and varieties of flower motifs. A unique thing about Chinese wedding tea sets is they do not come with containers for collecting sugar or creamer.
