Forget party pies and sausage rolls – the bright, vibrant flavours of Thailand make perfect party fare for summer events. With a few modifications, your favourite Thai recipes can be translated into lip-smacking canapes. Try these Thai finger foods at your next event, along with the perfect drink partners.
The classic Thai fish cake is ideal for a crowd. Serve these bite-sized Thai fish cakes on toothpicks, with a bowl of sweet chilli sauce for dipping. If you’re feeling fancy, garnish each with a coriander leaf and slice of red chilli. These steamed chicken and prawn cakes will also work a treat – steam them in a silicone mini muffin pan for bite-sized versions.
To drink: Pour a riesling or rosé with these gently spiced, savoury cakes.
Fire up the barbecue to create summer-perfect canapes, such as these lamb satay skewers with a massaman dipping sauce. These grilled prawns with tamarind sauce also work a treat – peel the prawns and thread them onto bamboo skewers, then chargrill and glaze with the tamarind sauce. For a vegetarian version, try these vegetable yellow curry barbecue skewers with paneer or firm tofu. These skewers take some time to prepare, so thread all of the ingredients well before your guests arrive, then cook them once the party starts. Be sure to have a spare bowl handy for people to place their empty sticks.
To drink: For the lamb skewers, try a sparkling red wine with a hint of sweetness.
No canape menu is complete without a fried dish or two. These elegant, slender prawn rolls are just the ticket. Deep-fry the prawn rolls in advance, drain well on paper towel, then reheat in the oven before serving.
To drink: Champagne or Australian sparkling white wine will cut through the richness of this dish.
If your event is running for a few hours, particularly if it’s during dinner, be sure to provide enough food for your hungry guests. Follow the lead of the best caterers by serving one or two substantial dishes along with your canapes. Buy takeaway noodle boxes and fill with a zesty noodle and prawn salad, or pad Thai noodles, then serve with chopsticks or plastic cutlery.
To drink: Cleansing beers will go down a treat with each of these dishes.
