Bento Boxes have a long history in Japan dating back many centuries. But did you know, they are also historically associated with many cultures including those of Korea, China, and Taiwan?
Deriving from the term for ‘convenient’, the best way for Westerners to think of Bento is like packing a well-balanced Asian meal into a lunchbox – there are even companies who specialise in Bento Box designs featuring everything from superheroes to pop-stars to elegantly designed oak-panelled boxes!
The key to a good Bento box is balance. Japanese Bento usually consists of rice (nearly always), a protein such as meat/ fish/ chicken/ tofu, salad/ pickled vegetables and fruit/ dessert.
These days, it is great to have fun with Bento, personalising for guests at a party or for picnics. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
Here are some delicious ideas for your next Bento party or picnic.
