10 Minute Thai Iced Tea

Thai iced tea, also known as Cha-yen, is a traditional breakfast drink from Thailand that is fast becoming popular with many people the world over. Mostly served cold, this drink has a vibrant orange colour and tropical taste signifying its Southeast Asian allegiance.

Make Your Own: Thai Iced Tea

Making this exotic drink is fairly simple and cheap (when compared to the high prices in restaurants). The best part though, is that you can always have some stored in your refrigerator to cool down a hot day.

Thai Iced Tea Recipe: Ingredients

  1. 1 cup (80gms) tea leaves, you can either buy a tea mix or some tea bags (preferably Thai tea brands)
  2. 4 cups (950ml) of water
  3. ¾ cup of sugar
  4. Star anise, orange flowers, vanilla, clove, cinnamon and any other spices you might like in your tea (if you’re an adventurous person, mix different flavours to make your own version of Thai tea)
  5. Condensed milk/ half and half/ coconut milk/ low-fat milk
  6. Ice

Thai Iced Tea Recipe: Method

  1. Bring water to a boil in a pot.
  2. Add sugar, star anise, orange flowers, vanilla, clove, cinnamon and tea leaves. Continue boiling for 3 to 5 minutes while constantly stirring.
  3. Strain the boiled tea into a container and set aside to cool.
  4. Add ice to a glass and pour about half a glass of the cooled tea into the glass.
  5. Carefully add the milk of your choice to form separate layers.
  6. Garnish with some mint leaves and serve.
