The Mod Squad: Five Must-try Modern Chinese Restaurants

As we continue to showcase Australia’s best contemporary Asian eateries, today we share our favourite modern Chinese restaurants, including Dan Hong’s game-changing Mr Wong in Sydney and Victor Liong’s rock ‘n’ roll Chinese restaurant, Lee Ho Fook, in Melbourne.

Mr Wong, Sydney

When it comes to modern Chinese fare, Sydney chef Dan Hong can do no wrong. Hong heads up the kitchen at Mr Wong, a chic 240-seat restaurant in the heart of the CBD. The contemporary Cantonese-style menu includes daily dim sum of steamed shumai, decadent lobster and scallop dumplings, duck spring rolls and pillowy cheung fun noodles. From the main menu, zero in on the glossy char siu pork, pippies in XO sauce, and wok-tossed mud crab straight from the tank.

Lee Ho Fook, Melbourne

In Melbourne, chef Victor Liong is the one to watch for modern Chinese bites. His laneway restaurant, Lee Ho Fook, dials up the flavour in dishes such as Chongqing chicken skin studded with fiery chillies, luscious batons of crispy eggplant in spiced red vinegar, and a light and bright take on sweet and sour pork. Liong is also changing the way Melburnians view breakfast with his new eatery, Lawyers, Guns & Money, dishing up fortifying bowls of congee and Taiwanese beef noodle soup. Forget smashed avo on toast – these punchy breakfasts will put a real pep in your step!
