There are few dishes in the world which exist today because of their rich history. Falling in that rare category is the Chinese must-eat: Dong Po Pork. Legend has it that Chinese writer Su Dongpo was banished to the city of Hanqzhou to live a life of abject poverty. During his exile, he lived on pork, which was easily available. It is said that he braised the pork, added wine, and made red-braised pork, before slowly stewing it on low heat.
The legend is not historically accurate but it’s a romantic story, and is therefore told with great pride by the locals, as they serve you a plate of this delicacy. Much like the narrative, the dish itself is a must-eat in China.
Dong Po Pork can also be made at home, provided you have the right ingredients and the right recipe. Serve it with steamed rice or steamed buns and savour this delicacy just like the Chinese would.
