Thailand is a country of colour, diversity and endless festivity. It plays host to a variety of events throughout the year, all of which are steeped in the country’s rich culture.

Loy Kathrong is one of Thailand’s most beautiful and picturesque festivals. People gather around lakes, canals and rivers to pay their respects to the Water Goddess by releasing lovely paper lamps, rafts and flowers into the water. The air is filled with the fragrance of lotuses and burning incense.

The main reason people celebrate this festival is to thank the Water Goddess for the bountiful harvest of the year gone by. Some people also hold on to an ancient belief that the water washes away the badness from one’s life. The sight of candles being lit along the river banks is beautiful, and definitely something to witness.
