Jamu and Culinary Festival

Celebrating the use of indigenous herbs (collectively known as Jamu) in traditional medicine, the Javanese people host the Jamu and Culinary Festival. The people of Java, Indonesia, have used herbs, leaves and roots as medicine for fitness and treatment for centuries. These are carefully selected to concoct herbal potions, medicines and drinks, which in Indonesia are collectively referred to as Jamu. These are said to add to inner and outer beauty and overall health.

The Jamu and Culinary festival is held in the district of Banyumas. The traditional Jamu carnival showcases workshops that are held to demonstrate the methods of mixing the various herbs; whereas the Culinary Festival utilises not only Indonesia’s extensive assortment of herbs, but also international herbs.

The opening ceremony is celebrated with traditional and contemporary dances and performances by top bands. There are appearances by representatives from different countries such as Japan, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Egypt, Japan, Vietnam, Russia, China, Austria and Germany.
