April 2015

Hainan Province, China

The first ten days of April are some of China’s most festive days. One of the most significant festivals which takes place during these days, is the Hainan International Coconut Festival.

The coconut is of great importance, not to mention cultural significance, in the Hainan province. They are so popular, that during this festival, people light unique lamps made of coconut shells. The soft glow from these lamps gives the streets and restaurants a very festive look.

During this festival, restaurants in Hainan Island promote various local Asian delicacies. Visitors can try varieties of Beijing, Cantonese and Sichuan dishes.

This festival is very unique. Apart from the usual display of fresh food, and the beautiful cultural performances that are the highlight of Asian festivals, the Hainan International Coconut Festival includes exhibitions of very interesting stamps and coins, making it a celebration of hobbies, too.
