The star fruit, also known as carambola, is the fruit of a species of trees native to South Asia. The fruit has longitudinal ridges (usually 5, but can vary) on its sides. When cut cross-sectionally, it resembles a star; which explains the name assigned to it. It has a gelatinous aril which varies in colour from light yellow to yellow, and has a sour to sweet taste. The fruit can be eaten on its own along with the skin. It can be used in cooking as well or made into preserves and juice drinks.
