A part of the soapberry family (to which the lychee also belongs), longan is a small, sweet, succulent fruit with a thin, bark-like shell. It is often called ‘dragon-eye’, because of its resemblance to the pupil, when halved. A rich source of carbohydrates, calcium and vitamin C, the longan is a sweet, healthy option when it comes to dessert time. Apart from being eaten fresh, it can be added to a fruit salad or savoury salad, or even poached for use in sweet and savoury dishes. Longans are ideal when served with almond jelly or as part of a colourful fruit medley with honeydew and watermelon.
